"Parnell and Ireland" is an Irish jig in D Major. The parts are AABB.<br> According to Ryan’s Mammoth Collection, it was composed by one Tom Doyle<br> in honor of the great Irish politician and nationalist Charles Stewart Parnell<br> (1846-1891), a Member of Parliament who urged tenants not to pay rent in<br> protest of oppression at the hands of landlords. His career was ruined by<br> scandal after it was revealed he was having an affair with a married woman.<br> Composer Doyle also contributed "Paddy's Farewell to America" and "Buttermilk<br> and Pratees" to William Bradbury Ryan's 1883 collection (published in Boston<br> by Elias Howe). <br> I have not been able to find any information on Tom Doyle or this tune.<br> It was printed in Cole's 1000 Fiddle Tunes (1940) and Ryan’s Mammoth Collection (1883).<br>
